About the performance

Anniversary event celebrating 30 years of the Kalamata International Dance Centre.

Tradition is memory. Dance is memory. Song is memory.

The dance performance Fones is the result of the collaboration between choreographer Panagiota Kalimani and female and male choir members from the Friendship, Solidarity and Culture Clubs A and B of the Municipality of Kalamata. The creative process began with the Kalamatianos dance, a traditional circular dance that is closely linked to the history and collective memory of the city.

Through two workshops on vocal and movement improvisation, the group focused on the structure, rhythm and dynamics of the Kalamatianos, seeking new ways to experience and reinterpret it. In this performance, the structure of the traditional dance and song is reshaped through the personal narratives and memories of the participants.

Through these stories, voices and bodies compose a new collective narrative, where the traditional rhythm of the Kalamatianos is transformed into a living archive of their memory and experience. Dance became a meeting point between past and present, while voice and movement came together in a performance that explores how memory is transmitted and transformed through time.

At the Amphitheatre of the Kalamata Castle, a place deeply connected to the city’s history and cultural identity, the voices and bodies of women and men engage in a dialogue with the past and the present. The rhythm of the Kalamatianos and the pulse of the music echo within the castle, transforming the performance into a ritual where collective memory comes alive.

In 1994, she continued her studies at the Centre de danse international de Rosella Hightower in Cannes. In 1996, she completed her training at the Centre de danse contemporaine d’Angers, where the artistic directors were the renowned choreographers Joëlle Bouvier and Régis Obadia. Upon graduating, she was immediately invited to collaborate with them (Les Chiens, Fureur, De l’Amour, L’oiseau Loup).

From 2002, she also collaborated with other dance companies: Experience Harmaat (Topo, 2002), Carlotta Ikeda (Togue, 2003), Kubilai Khan Investigations (Sorrow Love Song, 2004–2005), and Nasser Martin Gousset (Peplum and Comedy, 2006–2008). Since 2006, she has been working with Josef Nadj (Poussière de soleils, Asobu, Cherry Brandy).

In 2009, she co-founded The Plant Collective with other dancers, presenting the performances Trente (Athens Festival, 2009) and Double Take (Athens Festival, 2011). Since 2014, she has focused exclusively on her own choreographic work, including Contreplongées (Onassis Stegi, 2014), Mam Mam Un Dîner Magique (Onassis Stegi, 2016), Arrêt sur Image(MIR Festival, 2016), and Allez viens…, a performance featuring eight acclaimed actors at the National Theatre of Greece (2019).

In 2022, she was responsible for movement direction and choreography in Spirtokouto, The Musical – War Within Four Walls at Onassis Stegi. That same year, she conceived and directed the dance performance Voices (an installation at the Old Archaeological Museum as part of Anoichta Pania, Chania 2022). Her works are presented in Greece and internationally.

In 2024, she performed as a dancer in the opera Armide, directed by Lilo Baur, at the Opéra Comique de Paris.

Alongside her artistic work, she holds a teaching diploma and teaches dance classes and workshops at the Drama School of the National Theatre of Greece, the Centre Chorégraphique d’Angers, the Centre Chorégraphique d’Orléans, the Centre Chorégraphique de Nantes, and other institutions.
