In the spring of 1995, the Kalamata International Dance Centre was founded as part of the National Cultural Network of Cities to support, promote and present the art of dance focusing on three key areas: research, education, and artistic creation and production. This led to the birth of the Kalamata International Dance Festival which quickly established itself as an important part of the national and international contemporary dance calendar.
Since 2025, the objective has been the activation of the International Dance Centre throughout the year, beyond the summer festival period, through the development of a network of synergies with both national and international and artistic institutions. This framework strengthens the organisation’s creative engagement in research and production through artistic commissions that include contemporary dance works as well as community-based projects, with an emphasis on connecting dance with the urban and natural landscape of Kalamata, artistic residency programmes, and the presentation of performances during the autumn and spring seasons.
Based at the Kalamata Dance Megaron, the Centre operates as a living cultural organisation that fosters the development of contemporary dance on both a national and an international level.
