KIDFAnniversary Exhibition

Anniversary Exhibition | “Kalamata, the City of Dance”
July 18–27 | 18:00–23:00 | Kalamata Dance Megaron – Lobby

Throughout the Festival’s run, the Lobby of the Kalamata Dance Megaron will be hosting the anniversary exhibition Kalamata, the City of Dance. The exhibition highlights the Festival’s history through fragments – posters, programs, photographs, and videos – from its archive, as well as new creations.

As part of this tribute, and twenty-eight years after it was originally commissioned by the Festival in 1997, Dimitris Papaioannou’s iconic piece Monument, a solo performance dedicated to Nelly’s, the photographer who captured the beginnings of expressionist dance will be brought out from the archives of the Kalamata Dance Center and screened at the Megaron foyer. It marks Papaioannou’s only solo work, performed by Katerina Papageorgiou – Kat Válastur, in a film directed by Takis Hatzopoulos in collaboration with the company Cinetic. Dimitris Papaioannou had already collaborated with Katerina Papageorgiou in 1997 and fallen in love with her work as a performer, when Vicky Marangopoulou invited him to create this work for the Kalamata Dance Festival.

At the same time, the Festival archive becomes a source of inspiration for new conversations and new creations: visual art exhibitions, audiovisual installations, video art, performances, and more. In Reimagine, Lila Sotiriou creates a new work, accompanied by music from Stavros Gasparatos — a video inspired by the archive of the Kalamata International Dance Festival, featuring photographs and publications from the institution’s history. Moments, faces, bodies, and movements captured in the archival material — artists from both the Greek and international dance scene — come together in this audiovisual work as a tribute to the people who have left their artistic mark on the Festival’s 30-year journey.
