THOMAS HAUERT

DANCE IMPROVISATION TOOLS

About the workshop

Every joint in our body has its own range of movement, and there are countless possible combinations. The body possesses a profound practical knowledge—far beyond what the conscious mind can process—about its anatomy and mechanics, their actions and reactions, and their interactions with external forces (gravity, centrifugal and centripetal force, another body, etc.).

In a progressive series of improvisational tasks with one or more partners, exchanging information through sensory input, either through touch or at a distance, we will take advantage of this phenomenon to create forms, rhythms, movement qualities, and trajectories far more sophisticated than those our conscious mind could invent. We will be guided away from our habitual paths; patterns will be distorted or overridden.

In the first part of the day, we will practise multiplying and disconnecting actions within our own individual body to create a sense of polyphony. In the second part, we will improvise the composition of movement within a group, aiming to create a single organism from a collection of individual bodies.

We’ll tap into swarm intelligence—collective intelligence—constantly shifting between leading and following, or doing both simultaneously. We’ll take responsibility for initiating as well as supporting the development of others’ proposals or unconsciously emerging structures, maintaining an overview of the group composition while actively playing our part within it.

With the support of the WBI / Wallonie-Bruxelles International.
