The Kalamata International Dance Festival<\/strong> inaugurates a new collaboration with the archaeological site of Ancient Messene, proposing a distinctive experience that connects the site with its history while reactivating its collective dimension in the present.<\/p>\n

The evening is structured in two parts. The first part is a performance rooted in tradition, drawing inspiration from communal dances. The second part shifts the focus to coexistence, inviting the audience to dance, share the space, and encounter one another through a shared, collective experience.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

This new creation directly follows the line of Filipe Louren\u00e7o<\/strong>\u2019s ongoing artistic research, begun in 2018 with his solo Pulse(s) and developed further through his ensemble pieces Gou\u00e2l<\/em> and CHEB<\/em>. His artistic approach draws deeply on his own identity as a dancer\u2014first shaped by a solid background as an Arab-Andalusian musician and by training in traditional dances of the Maghreb, then enriched by a career in contemporary dance (working with Catherine Diverr\u00e8s, Olivier Dubois, Georges Appaix, Christian Rizzo, Mich\u00e8le Noiret, Boris Charmatz, among others).<\/p>\n

This unique trajectory defines the specificity of his creative process, which he now continues with the creation of a new piece for five performers.
\nAfter exploring a warrior dance known as Alaoui from the Rif region in his 2021 creation GOU\u00c2L<\/em>, this time Filipe Louren\u00e7o<\/strong> draws his inspiration from research into another traditional form: Ahidous, a collective Berber dance from Central Morocco (the Middle Atlas). This dance\u2014one of the most valued forms of collective bodily and poetic expression among Middle Atlas communities\u2014has often accompanied festive occasions until quite recently.<\/p>\n

The challenge here is not to reverse gender divisions but to deconstruct them\u2014to lift the prohibitions that have traditionally shaped the female gaze or excluded women from the transmission of these practices. As always, Filipe Louren\u00e7o<\/strong>\u2019s choreographic writing seeks the total physical and emotional engagement of the body, embracing a critical dimension driven by a strong desire to bring ancestral traditions into dialogue with contemporary forms.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css_animation=”zoomIn” css=””]DANCING WITH THE COMMUNITY<\/span><\/p>\n

The Odeon of Messene<\/strong>, also known as the Ecclesiasterion<\/strong>, functioned in antiquity as a multi-purpose space primarily dedicated to the community, hosting theatrical and musical events as well as public assemblies of a political nature. Within this historical framework, the Festival\u2019s artistic curation brings forward once again the collective character of the site and the importance of communal gathering.<\/p>\n

Following the completion of the first part, the performance\u2019s musician for Amazigh in Situ, Amine Nouri, continues to play, organically extending the connection between audience and action and deepening the relationship with the archaeological site of Ancient Messene. The transition into the second part unfolds as a natural continuation of the performance, inviting the audience to dance and participate actively.<\/p>\n

The project will subsequently tour to contemporary public spaces, acquiring new dimensions through its interaction with each location and its respective audience.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]The production is co-organised with and supported by the Archaeological Society, the Municipality of Messene, and is presented in collaboration with the International Festival of Ancient Olympia and the Municipality of Pylos-Nestoros. <\/strong><\/p>\n
